Dittmer Air and Heat Questions
Why is My Home Air Conditioner Blowing Warm Air?
There are many reasons your AC is blowing hot or warm air. We will address some of the more common causes, some of which you may be able to fix on your own. But as always if you need immediate assistance, give us a call at (321) 637-0170 anytime of the day or night for fast, reliable service.
The Thermostat is set incorrectly or the fan is set to “ON”
This sounds almost too easy, right? Double-check your thermostat and make sure it isn’t set to “heat”. There are times when someone else may have accidentally set it wrong. You may also want to see if your thermostat has the fan set in the “on” position. This allows the fan to blow continuously even when the air conditioner isn’t actually cooling. This is perfectly okay, but it may cause your air conditioner to blow warmer air out of the vents when the outside unit isn’t running.
There’s a restriction in airflow
A restriction in the airflow to and from your air conditioner or heat pump can result in not enough air coming out of the vents to cool your home. Restricted airflow can also cause the compressor (the part that moves the refrigerant) in your AC’s outside unit to freeze or ice up.
The two most common causes of air flow restriction are:
- The air filter is dirty and/or hasn’t been replaced in a long time
- Your coils are dirty/clogged and you need a planned maintenance on your system. You haven’t had maintenance done on your AC this year so the coils are dirty
No electricity to the Condenser
Your air conditioning system is made up of two main components – an outdoor unit, called a condenser, and an indoor unit, either a furnace or air handler unit. The indoor unit houses the fan that blows air through your home, but it can only blow cool air if the outdoor unit is working. If air is blowing out of your vents but it’s not cold, it could be that the circuit breaker has tripped or the fuse has blown on the electrical circuit that provides electricity to your outdoor unit. Check your circuit breaker or fuse panel to make sure the circuit is supplying electricity to the outside air conditioning unit.
IMPORTANT: If the circuit breaker was tripped or fuse blown by the AC, we recommend you call a professional immediately as there may be an underlying major problem.
Other likely causes
Most likely, if you’re having issues with your air conditioner blowing hot or warm air, it’s either a problem with the compressor (housed in your outside unit) or your air conditioner is low on refrigerant. Or it may be a duct work problem, such as a broken or disconnected return duct that is drawing in unconditioned air from outside or an attic space. These issues require a professional’s help.

How Often Should I Change My Air Filter?
Check your air filter every month, especially during peak summer and winter months. Dirty filters should be replaced to improve air quality and air flow. Filters should be replaced monthly to ensure that your system is working at its best, And more frequently if you have several pets in your home or if you smoke or burn candles consistently. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system which can lead to expensive maintenance and repair costs.
Should I Keep Vents Open In Every Room?
Keep Vents open and unblocked in all rooms. Be sure to keep your supply and return air vents free of objects like throw rugs and furniture so your air conditioner can operate efficiently, and there is even cool air distribution. You should not close vents in rooms, even if used less often. It creates a higher static pressure in your duct system which causes your system to work much harder and is not energy efficient at all. Not to mention, it also causes condensation and mold buildup in your ducts.
